The Australian Labradoodle

The Australian Labradoodle originated in the 80's in Australia when a third breed was infused in to further focus on and improve temperament, coat, conformation, and size. The infused breeds include Irish Water Spaniel as well as the American and English Cocker Spaniel and in some lines the Wheaten Terrier. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been carefully bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition without ever having to go back to the parent breed of the Labrador or Poodle.

Although different breeds were used in the initial fine tuning of the breed, today around the world three breeds are now used to make the Australian Labradoodle: Labrador Retriever, Poodle and Cocker Spaniel (English or American). At this point in time these are the only three breeds which may still be infused into the Australian Labradoodle, according to WALA Rules and Regulations.

The Australian Labradoodle comes in three sizes: mini, medium, and standard, There are two allergy friendly coat types: fleece and wool. The four basic colors of black, yellow, caramel, and chocolate appear in a variety of different shades and patterns. Consistency in temperament and coat in the labradoodle is still being developed. Conscientious breeders, such as us, are working toward refining both temperament and coat, while ensuring genetic health by carefully introducing new lines.  We do this by adhering to the guidelines set forth by several organizations.

There are several organizations that help to protect and ensure that best breeding practices are being followed.

These are:

1: Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) - Protecting the welfare of the Labradoodle and Australian Labradoodle breeds since 2004

2:  The Australian Labradoodle Club Of America (ALCA) - Is the “Parent Club” for the breeders of the Authentic Australian Labradoodle in America since 2005

3:  The Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association (WALA) - continuing improvement of the Australian Labradoodle and Labradoodle breeds
